How long have you been around. How did you begin?
The Australian Drug Foundation has been servicing the community since 1959, when it was known as the Alcohol Federation of Victoria. The organisation was founded in response to community concern around war veterans returning with alcohol problems. See a history of our organisation.

What is your opinion on alcohol and drug use?
The Australian Drug Foundation does not condone or encourage the use or misuse of illicit or licit drugs. All drugs have the potential to create health and other problems. We view the use of drugs non-judgementally and from a health perspective. See a comprehensive list of Our Views.
What is the evidence that drug harm prevention works?
History has told us that zero tolerance approach to drug use is not the most effective way to reducing harm and achieve cultural change. Australia is fortunate in that it has had a three-pillared drug policy since 1986. It is the envy of many countries and is successful by any comparison. The three pillars are:
- Supply Reduction involves police and customs and aims to limit the availability of illegal drugs and enforce the limitations on legal drugs
- Demand Reduction aims to delay the commencement of drug use and reduce the problems that can occur
- Harm Reduction recognises the need that some people will use drugs unsafely and aims to improve the safety of that use.
What are you trying to achieve?
Our aim is to create an Australian culture that supports people to live healthy, safe and satisfying lives, unaffected by drug and alcohol problems.
