About CAAN

The long-term goal of CAAN is to change the cultural status of alcohol in Australia and to reduce the social pressure to drink excessively.

Australians have already demonstrated that they can alter fundamental attitudes towards drug use by changing their attitudes towards tobacco use and drink-driving. CAAN endeavours to change the way our society behaves around alcohol to reduce the prevalence of alcohol-related accidents, illnesses and diseases.

More specifically, our campaign objectives include:

  • monitoring alcohol advertising, marketing and promotion, and alcohol products
  • challenging advertisements, promotions and products that are excessive, aggressive and/or inappropriate
  • lobbying policy-makers in government and non-government sectors
  • encouraging people to serve and drink alcohol within safe limits
  • challenging instances of unsafe and/or excessive alcohol use
  • assisting community efforts, by providing the community with practical tools to respond to alcohol-related issues
  • facilitating communication and debate around alcohol issues by hosting forums and meetings and disseminating research findings
